Title: advice for admin of meds please
isdeards - June 15, 2008 05:46 PM (GMT)
right poor Stew (my white bunnie) has had problems with that awful parasite which attacks the brain and eyes since she was tiny.
the vet gave her only a month to live this time last year and we have been battling with it ever since.
any how - i went to see a new vet the other day and instead of prescribing Panacur she gave her Valbazen - but she just won't take it :o
she is just spitting it all out
apparently this may save her site in her eye (she is blind already in 1, has an awful head tilt and is fast loosing sight in her other one - which is full of puss)
i really hope someone has some great ideas as I have been given new hope for her

Poor, poor bunny, she has certainly been put through the mill. The only idea I can come up with is to perhaps put the meds in a piece of her favourite veg and administer it that way.

I have tried that tonight - watched over her as she ate around it  nawty bunny!!!!!!!
doesn't she know I just want to help her?????
well i know she doesn't - but it makes me look like i am such a bad mum :(

You are not a bad bunny mummy. I wonder if by putting a smaller amount of med in a bigger piece of veg would work and keep going until she's had the correct amount of meds. I'll have to put my thinking cap on :D

I take it she doesnt like being restrained at all because of her head tilt? When i was medicating Pecan the only way i could get it into him was wrapping him in a towel and syringe into his mouth quickly but my only concern would be your bunny panicking because it cant balance poor little bunster :(
Your not a bad mum because you are helping her, its just frustrating they cant understand us and help us help them :)

she hates being restrained :( she doesn't mind cuddles - though would rather not - if you know what i mean?
it was ok with the panacur as it was a paste - but this stuff is just runny liquid
and she has to have 0.6 ml - which doesn't sound a lot - but boy can she make it go everywhere

Oh believe me i know it can go everywhere lol Pecan had to have 0.4ml metacam, 1.25ml septrin and 0.4ml zantac and my god it went all over the place!!

well so much has happened since i last posted
i have had to separate the bunnies :(
Casserole has been attacking Stew - she started having a phantom pregnancy and that was it!
I think because Stew is ill that Casserole sees her as a threat :o
This means that I have had to purchase an emergency hutch and split the run
this is not ideal - but they can still see each other and there has been no attempt to fight through the wire :D
It also means i know that Stew is getting all her meds - as i am making sure there is a small amount in lots of different bits of her foods :D
not ideal - but hopefully will help

sorry you have had to seperate them but like you say at least you know the meds are going in!! I had to hide pecans meds in food too, like you say not ideal but if thats the only way its better than not at all :)
