I'm going to try and litter box train my 12 week old lion head male does anyone have any helpful hints or info on what kind of litter, box or ect.. that I should get to make this work. I would also like to know what to do about having the litter box inside his cage and what do I do when I want him out of the cage? I've never litter boxed trained anything. I don't have cats and I don't like cats so I don't know what to do. I have carpets and don't want him to pee on them and make my house smell. So any hints will help. I would like my chester to be able to be like a cat and not have to be in his cage and able to run around and pee in the box not on the floor. I think he can do it he is a very clean rabbit and goes to the bathroom in only one corner of his cage so I think he will do it if he's given the chance. :D

when we litter trained our 5, we bought the large corner trays. We put them in the corner that the buns did the most of their "business" and put some poos on top of the wood pellets inside the trays so they knew this was the place to do their business.

We also put some hay close to the trays so they could munch hay and poo both at the same time.

As he already uses just one corner for his toilet, I think it will be pretty easy for you to litter train him. You can either use a regular cat litter tray or corner tray, I have never used a corner one so can't really say which is best. You could use shavings, wood pellets or a paper based litter. Just place the tray into the corner he uses now and place a little of the waste where he goes now, into the tray so he knows that it now has to go in there.

When he's out of the cage, is he able to go back into it when he wants to? If not, you can just have an extra tray in the room he's going to be.

I can't get mine to use their corner trays. :(

If I put trays in the corner where they do thier business they get quite cross :angry: turn them upside down and move them across the cage and then lie in them. Or, they will just use a different corner. I have thought about getting a second tray to see if that works and using cable ties to hold it in place to stop it being upturned.

But, when we have them out of the cage they seem to 'hold' themselves til they go back in.
They always go straight to their corners and wee there. They drop a few poops on the floor but of course that's not really a problem.

I think chester can do it he would wee on me just last week and this week he's a little bit older and he hasn't weed on me all week. :bunhug: He's the best little baby ever :bunhug: I can say that he's like my 6th child. I'm one of those mommy's that just have to have a baby to be happy. and My youngest child is 2 1/2 ( christian you can see him in the mug shots) haha and we are trying to have a baby but nothing yet so I just adopted a baby bun. till I can have a real baby but he'll still be my baby to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :bunhug: :bounce:

What kind of litter do you use in your box! I'm thinking about useing shaving just because that's what I use in the bottom of the cages. But where Chester is a Lion Head and has a butt full of hair. I'm not sure if the shaving will work or just make more work for me to clean the shavings out of his fur. :faint: :bunjig: What else could I use to make it cleaner for Chester?

To stop the shavings sticking to fur, you could put hay on top of the shavings. They like eating when they're 'going' anyway. Or you could use a wood based litter which is heavier, like pellets which stick less.

I've tried shavings, wood based pellets, newspaper, shredded paper and nothing.

But they still refuse to use it.

Frosty has now moved into a traditional outdoor hutch. (the babies are borrowing his indoor one for a bit) He now does his business in the 'bedroom' area and still lies in his corner tray. Silly bun! lol
