Stompin Tori - September 15, 2008 10:25 PM (GMT)
Hey ther, can anyone help me. I have a rabbit and guinea-pig and im not sure of the best stuff to feed them so they both get the best nutrients and stuff. Example is it ok to mix foods then give them lots of veg wiyh the mixed. I did get some advice but it seems everyone here has lots of knowledge and i would like to put my mind at rest knowing im doing the best for them! Also wots the best veg?

Kim - September 15, 2008 10:27 PM (GMT)
I would feed the bunny either excel pellets or science selective and the guinea pigs excel guinea. There was a list of veg somewhere on the forum...Justine help! :) Also dont forget good quality hay makes up 80% of their diet

Hope that helps :)

Stompin Tori - September 15, 2008 10:35 PM (GMT)
Brill thanx. Ive jus found the veggie list. As they are kept 2gether is ok to mix the food? Im not sure and losts of people say different things.

justine - September 15, 2008 10:42 PM (GMT)
Hi Tori, rabbits and guinea pigs nutritional needs are different from each others. Each food contains different levels of vitamins suitable for the animals so it's difficult to mix the foods and get the right balance for each of them.

Have they been living together long?

Vickie - September 16, 2008 06:33 PM (GMT)
Rabbits and piggies should not live together. Their nutritional needs are different and they speak a different lanugage. Also there is a danger of piggie being squished by bunny. Piggie injuries are quite horrific when they are on the receiving end of a rabbit "thump".

fionaw - September 16, 2008 07:19 PM (GMT)
It can be the other way around as well, there was a nasty photo in Fur and Feather magazine a while ago of an abscess on a rabbit's back that was caused by a male guinea pig it lived with. I'd separate them if possible and get a friend for each of the same species, two piggies will usually get along O if introduced properly and two bunnies together would of course need to be neutered.

topcat - September 16, 2008 07:43 PM (GMT)
I agree that GP's and bunnies should not live together, too much of a risk with injuries.

I believe so much complaining was done that even Pets at Home dont put theirs together now!.

Kim - September 16, 2008 07:58 PM (GMT)
I read your post wrong, i thought the guinea and rabbit were living seperately, silly me!! Yep i agree with everybody else i would seperate them :)

Bunnysnug - September 16, 2008 09:44 PM (GMT)
I knew of a bunny & GP that lived together, the piggie bit the bunnies penis very severely and it was badly damaged. Took months to heal :( Ideally bunnies should live with other bunnies & piggies with other piggies :D :D

Stompin Tori - September 17, 2008 09:49 PM (GMT)
Awww thank u so much. It seems i have been given some awful advice from the pet shop i got my guinea from. I was told they can live together, rabbits can eat gp food but not vice versa and you can mix the food if you want etc.
Happy that i got my bunny from a breeder.
Im soooooooo glad i saw the ad for rabbit tales :bounce: in pets at home. Now i know i can do the right thing for both of them.

Also looking at the piccies in the post about your bunnies humble obodes has given me loads of inspiration!!!! :happydance: Me and chris will be on a mission to improve the living space this weekend.

Thanku Thanku Thanku Thanku

Thats a great post Tori. Thank you. :shuffle:

It's good to know that my flyers are being seen. Which branch of pets at home did you see it? I have put one in both the gloucester and cheltenham stores.

What pet shop did you get the piggy from?

Can't wait to se pics of their new improved living spaces. :bounce:

PinkBunny - September 17, 2008 10:13 PM (GMT)
It's lovely to see somebody care about their animals enough to ask for advice and then take it on board.

Pet shops just want you to spend your cash (after all they are a business) and will tell you mostly what you want to hear (in my opinion)

I have known buns and gps live together, but as everyone else has said I have also known of some very bad injuries. Maybe you could keep them seperately but let them have a supervised run together for short periods if you want them to be friends.

As for the diet, a good diet could be the difference between your bun living for 12 yrs or maybe just 4 yrs. :bunhug:

Stompin Tori - September 17, 2008 10:17 PM (GMT)
I saw it in the glos one. It jus stood out and it was the first thing me and mum spotted on the board. Its jus so nice to know there are genuine people wanting to help and jus chat

I will be posting piccies of all once complete.

I went to pets m8 in quedgley. They seem very popular but giving wrong advice. :(

justine - September 17, 2008 10:27 PM (GMT)
Is Pets m8 the one with a tiny part, hidden at the back of the shop, where the animals are?

Stompin Tori - September 17, 2008 10:48 PM (GMT)
Yea thats the one. I jus wanted to rescue them all :(

Hey there,

Just thought id let everyone know about my bunny and piggie situation.

Well we looked into all the options and as we could not afford another hutch and friend for each a very lovely person has taken on brisk the guinea and is introducing him to lots of new friends, where i think he will be very happy.

We now have extended the 2 tier hutch with a run out the font and next weekend are bunny proofing the garden so we dont up with bunnies being at large, lol! Wotsee now has his brother living with him. Obviously now have to get them neutered :( BUT now Wotsee and Sharkey are happy being together again, hopping round :bounce: with each other and preening each other. They have made are family complete......ish......couple more kids and we'll be sorted, sucker for punishment. lol!

Im soooooo sad :cry1: to let my pretty piggie go but he will be happier with other piggies.

THANKU SO MUCH RABBIT TALES its becoz of u i have been able to do right by my pets! This is a fantastic site i will be telling EVEYONE about u!!!!!!

   :bunhug:

justine - September 21, 2008 09:06 PM (GMT)
Awww I'm sure the guinea pig will looove his new home with other piggies.

It sounds like you are doing really well with the rabbits accomodation. Well done. :bounce:

How old are they now? If I was you, I would get them neutered as soon as you can because males can get quite aggressive towards each other once they hit puberty and the hormones fly around. Neutering calms that sort of behaviour right down.

Thank you for the compliments on Rabbit Tales. Thats very kind of you.

Stompin Tori - September 21, 2008 09:13 PM (GMT)
Will be aiming to get them done in the next week. They are 8 weeks old now. Is that too young??

Vickie - September 21, 2008 09:14 PM (GMT)
I'm so pleased your piggie has found happiness with new friends. You should give yourself a pat on the back - a lot of people would have simply ignored the advice.

As Justine has already said, if you could get the boys neutered before the hormones start raging, that would be great.

I look forward to seeing pics of the boys.

Well done

Kim - September 21, 2008 09:15 PM (GMT)
Bucks can usually be castrated from about 16 weeks old and does can be spayed 5-6 months old :)

justine - September 21, 2008 09:19 PM (GMT)
I think some vets do males from 12 weeks. I'm not positive on that though. It depends where you go on age and price.

What vets do you use Tori?

Vickie - September 21, 2008 09:21 PM (GMT)
The Rescue had the elephants done at 14 weeks.
