Title: The Tortoises
McBunny - January 5, 2009 01:08 PM (GMT)
Now for my shelled friends :) .
It all started with my horsefield Echo. I quite smoking 3 years ago and saved up my ciggy money to get a tortoise (i have always wanted one :D ).
This is Echo

Then i decided to get her a friend, so along came our other horsefield Roxanne.

Then on a trip to a reptile store for supplies, we accidently fell in love with two hermans  .
This is Odin

And this is Naboo

After many attempts at tortoise tables, we decided that Rabbit 140 cages were best.
So each pair enjoy a massive enclosure each :D

Awww do they still hibernate when they live indoors?
McBunny - January 5, 2009 03:54 PM (GMT)
They do still hibernate yes. Modern day hibernation is induced by the owner. You need to starve the torts first, then put them in an appropriate hibernation place :) .

I've always fancied a couple of tortoise(s?) is that all the space they would need for 2?
And do you recommend anywhere to get them?
McBunny - January 5, 2009 06:12 PM (GMT)
That space is fine for 2 young to juevenile torts. This is providing you go for a smaller breed such as horsefields or hermans :) . I think that cage is about 5ft long. They take about 10 years to grow to full size  .
Where abouts are you? It is best to go to a reputable breeder, sadly i had to get mine at reptile shops as there are no scottish breeders  . Still give it another few years for my hermans to mature and we will see :shuffle: .

Fab torts :D Can i ask what substrate you have there? :D
McBunny - January 5, 2009 09:48 PM (GMT)
Thank you :)
They are on hemcore and chipped wood. I find it best, they used to have soil/sand mix, but they just got themselves really messy and tried to eat it.
To be honest, i have changed all my pets onto hemp now, i find it great for bunny trays too and way cheaper than megazorb
Bunnysnug - January 5, 2009 10:07 PM (GMT)
Ok thank you, i take it they don't attempt to eat the hemp? All the questions, sorry. :)

Lovely, lovely, lovely. My friend has torts and she puts them in the fridge through hibernation.

Not really no. Very very occasionally i have to retrieve a bit that is hanging out of their mouths, but they dont munch at it the way they did the soil and sand. I dont mind questions, ask away
Thanks Mel :)
Vickie, fridge hibernation is meant to be the easiest way  just my fridge has a freezer on top, so it gets too cold  .

One of the teachers at the nursery where my twins went used to breed them and bring them into nursery when they were the size of a 50p piece to show the kiddies. She told me that she used to put them on top of a dustbin full of peat (I think that's what she said) and pop the lid on and they would bury themselves for hibernating. How clever!
My Mom has recently bought a horsefield actually, he lives in a cute little tortoise shell shaped house. He's lovely :bunhug:

They are beautiful! me, my sister and my brother when young had one - she was called betty and she lived for what seemed at that time years. I am going back ( more years then I would like to admit!)
