Title: would you ..

Hi, would you put your bunny to sleep if he/she had dental problems? Surely a vet would not do this?
justine - February 9, 2009 10:10 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't. Unfortunately, I think some vets would do it for pretty trivial things. :(

Really! I am shocked Justine that vets would put rabbits to sleep for such a trivial matter. I ask, as I overheard two people on the bus earlier and one was saying that her rabbit had teeth problems and she had tryed to file them down it kept struggling, but she would take 'it' to the vet to be put to sleep as this ' would be best for it'.

No, I on a personal basis, or Fat Fluffs as a rescue, don't have buns put to sleep due to dental issues.

I was just shocked to hear what the women was saying. I had my niece with me and she kept nudging me as to say 'don't you dare say a word.' I will be glad when my car's fixed so I won't have to listen to such things.
Mind you, my last vet ( years ago) sent our last house bun home and we was not well at all - I had him home for about 10 minutes and I thought no way.. anyway, I phoned another vet ( recommended) and when the previous vet faxed the medicine list through to them they had given him way too much for his size.
To put a rabbit to sleep for dental problems.. I am not suprised the poor rabbit stuggled while she attempted to file teeth!

I have a bun who used to have dental problems (since fixed!) but would definatley not put "it" down!
I would have piped up then, and offered to rehome "it"!!

Thats one of the problems with some vets, they simply don't know enough about rabbits to know how to treat them or even know that there is a simple treatment, so they think the best thing to do is pts.

I wouldn't have a bun put to sleep for dental problems. I wonder what on earth the woman was filing it's teeth with  poor bun :(

I would not put a rabbit to sleep because of dental problems :) my dwarf lop had bad teeth and had regular dentals but lived to be over 9 years old :bunhug:

Had my niece not been with me .. I would have done so. She heard it too, and knowing me as she does, I think being young the idea of her auntie kicking off on the bus would have been awful for her. She is old enough to know, that her auntie does kick off , but at the time I had to keep shhtum. When we got off she said it was cruel what the lady said.
How can you attempt to file a rabbits teeth and then wonder why 'it' stuggles. I mean you can't clip a bunnies teeth as they splinter and crack - but file!
PinkBunny - February 9, 2009 11:12 PM (GMT)
Poor bunny, no I wouldn't do that either.
The only thing I'm thinking though is that it's possible that the lady couldn't afford regular dentals for the rabbit and then maybe it was suffering either because it couldn't eat properly or she was causing it a lot of stress filing the teeth herself ??
Not that I think that it's a good reason to put him to sleep.
When my twins were born, I was a very protective mum and I was sooo worried that the cats might harm them or they might pass diseases on to them (Bearing in mind they were only 3lb 12oz and 4lb 15oz when they were born) So at one point I did consider rehoming them (Glad I didn't now) But my very crazy mother in law went mad at me and said that the cats were there first and that if I decided not to keep them that I shouldn't rehome them as it's not fair to stress them out and that she would take them to be put to sleep instead. !!!!!!!! :aaarggh:
Have you ever heard such nonsense in your life? Fatfluffs proves that animals can have a happy life with a new owner.
But then, my Mo in Law is pretty mental hehe hehe
We don't get on, can you tell? :loopy:

I don't think her spending habits had anything to do with the rabbits wellbeing to be honest, well not going on the rest of her conversation.
