Bunnysnug - March 18, 2009 06:58 PM (GMT)
I am hearing more & more about not using them for buns? Do you use them?
Kim - March 18, 2009 07:04 PM (GMT)
I use them! :D What else is their to use that can really give them the comfort of shavings and prevent sore hocks? ;)

I use layers of newspaper and loads of hay. The floor of the shed where the hairy mob live is covered in hay - Summer is a rex, who are prone to sore hocks, and she has nevered suffered.

I keep hearing about it causing liver problems & allergies etc. I'm going to stop shavings for Buggles to see if it helps with his eye, some days it's runny, others its dry
I thought thick layers of hay was better than shavings for sore hocks anyway?

I do use shavings (my Father in Law works for a wood shavings company and gets me a huge bag for nowt!) It's very well dust extracted as the company sells sawdust as well. It's also very soft, not like some of the very hard and sharp shop bought or compacted stuff I've seen.
I've not had any problems yet *fingers crossed*
I have the same problem as Kim, all my buns just rip the newspaper and eat it so the hutches end up a right mess in five minutes hehe

Bunny is big newspaper chewer, and mostly when I am trying to read it...I use woodshavings but make sure they have the dust extracted :)

I only use them in the litter tray. They absorb wee pretty well. They just have newspaper and hay in the rest of the hutch ( shredders also hehe)

I don't use them as the quality is so variable and its expensive for what you get
however mine only have one litter tray anyway so I fill that with Megazorb instead

I have heard stuff like this, I read somewhere that a rescue centre would not give consent for a rabbit to be rehomed there unless the prospective owner changed from wood shavings to some form of paper pulp bedding/hay.
I was surprised when I read this as I thought it was sawdust that you shouldnt use with rabbits as the fine fibres can irritate them causingeye and chest/breathing problems, now its been said that woodshavings are just as bad.
After saying that I didnt use woodshavings with my previous bun, but when we got rosie and jim, they went in a hutch at night and they had woodshavings covered with hay and they never had any adverse effects. When, i first got them litter trained they had woodshavings in their litter trays aswell.

I'm in the process of trying out shredded apple and pear branches.
A chap collects my bunny waste for his allotment - think he collects Shelley's too. He asked if I would try it out on my bunnies to see what I thought. It smells devine, not dusty at all.
