Title: Poorly Flower

PinkBunny - May 9, 2009 09:31 PM (GMT)
This afternoon, Kayla, left Flower on the settee and went off out the room. When I came in about 5mins later she was on the floor with her head turned to the left and going round in circles (presumably she fell off the settee). We rushed her to the vets but by the time we got there she seemed fine and binkyed round the vets without problem. The vet gave her a painkilling injection and she seemed fine.
About an hour ago we checked on her and she was wobbling her head to the left and her eyes were twitching again. I rang the Vet and she said she wasn't concerned at the moment but to call them back if she gets worse.

I am so worried, she is such a lovely little bun.

Anyone ever had experience of this?

Kim - May 10, 2009 06:25 PM (GMT)
Could it be a form of epilepsy? I hope she gets better soon poor little girlie sending loads of vibes

Vickie - May 10, 2009 07:32 PM (GMT)
How is Flower today?

PinkBunny - May 10, 2009 07:45 PM (GMT)
She seems ok in herself. She is eating and drinking and loving nose rubs as usual but having real problems with balance. I rang the Vet back but they're not worried and just think it's head tilt due to trauma.

It's just awful seeing her like that, she tries to correct her head but it just goes back to the side again.

I think I might pop to see Rebecca at Pet Vacc Clinic in Coventry tomorrow and see what she thinks.

I'm a very worried bunny mummy. :(

Vickie - May 10, 2009 08:25 PM (GMT)
Is Flower on any pain relief?

I think your best bet is to get her to Rebecca in the morning.

Good luck.

PinkBunny - May 10, 2009 08:31 PM (GMT)
The vet didn't give me any pain relief for her. I have some metacam (dog) that the Vet gave me last week for Lara. Would it be ok to give her that? Do you know what the right dosage would be?

bunny mummy - May 10, 2009 08:33 PM (GMT)
Poor Flower sending her a big :bunhug: :bunhug:

A similar thing happened to my previous bunny and the vet said it was vestibular syndrome ( something to do with the inner ear and it effects balance) he was fine one minute and then his head would tilt and he would be wobbly on his feet. The vet had to give him steriod injections in his back leg.

From what I've read, Head Tilt can be caused by many different things. Flower is only 9 weeks old (we adopeted her at 4 weeks when her mommy died) so I'm hoping it's nothing too serious and just a symptom after falling off the settee.

Vickie - May 10, 2009 08:51 PM (GMT)
I'd be reluctant to give a 9 week old bun a dose of Metacam unless the vet advises it.

Keep us posted.

Thanks Vickie, will be off to the PVC in the morning and hopefully Flower will be on the road to recovery.

PinkBunny - May 11, 2009 11:17 AM (GMT)
I took Flower to see Cat at PVC Coventry. She thinks that she would not have harmed herself enough to cause Head Tilt when she fell off the settee. She thinks it is more likely that she eith has E Cuniculi or a middle ear infection. So she has prescribed antibiotics and 28 days of Panacur for her.

She said that there's no way of knowing if the head tilt can be cured completely but all we can do is try.

Cat was quite disgusted that the emergency vets did not weigh her before giving the pain killer injection. She only weighs 400g, bless her!

So anyway, we'll try the meds and fingers crossed she gets better and learns to walk in a straight line again (she is turning left all the time at the moment)

Awww bless her. Pleased she has the meds - fingers and paws crossed for a speedy recovery.

aww, poor baby bunny flower. I hope she is on the mend very soon. :bunhug:

Flower's head tilt is getting considerably worse. She is starting to have real problems getting around and rolling around and around til she can get her ballance again. Her head is tilted right over now. Sometimes she will just roll onto her side and lie there, upside down. When she rolls over in her cage she gets saw dust in her eyes so I've stopped putting it in her cage.

She is eating and drinking normally, her poo is normal.

I just don't know what to do, I have read how some rebbits get to the point where they cannot stand at all and therefore the head tilt impairs thier quality of life. I really don't want to have her put to sleep, especially when she's only been on the meds for 5 days but I just worry she is suffering. :cry3:

Here's some pics of her now -

bunny mummy - May 20, 2009 11:40 AM (GMT)
Hi I just wanted to know how Flower is doing and to say I hope the meds have kicked in and she is doing a lot better. :bunhug:

PinkBunny - May 20, 2009 02:24 PM (GMT)
Thankyou for asking, I'm afriad she seems no better but I was reading that it's likely she needs a course of 3 months antibiotics and the vet only gave me 10 days.
She is fine in herself still but her neck is no better at all.
I'll be going back to the vets early next week

bunny mummy - May 20, 2009 02:50 PM (GMT)
ah bless her. I hope she is going to be ok, 3 months is a long time isn't it - hopefully she will be alot better in less time. I don't really know much about head tilt, other than its a bacterial infection - she looks such a cute little bunny and my heart went out to her ( and you ) when you were debating about what to do for the best.

fingers crossed and sending vibes from rosie and jimmy. :bunhug:

PinkBunny - May 20, 2009 03:37 PM (GMT)
head tilt can be caused by a few things including E Cuniculi so that's why she's on 28 days of panacur too.

I have also read bunnies can recover after months of physio once the infection or infestation is cleared up so I'm feeling more positive about it now.

bunny mummy - May 21, 2009 08:46 PM (GMT)
I really hope that she is going to be ok. sure she will be with the meds and physio - surprising what they can do for bunnies these days.

PinkBunny - June 5, 2009 12:58 PM (GMT)
I have some fab news.

I went back to the vets and asked for more Baytril but she said she wanted to wait til the panacur course was finished as she's such a little bun.

On Monday, I got up and went to see Flower and she climbed out of her bed and her head seemed much better. It isn't completely upright but it's definately a big improvement. She has her balance back and is an expert at binkys now, as well as bouncing around her cage and jumping on her higher platform.

I am so, so relieved. She is certainly on the road to recovery.

:happydance: :happydance: :happydance:
