Title: Rescued Bunny
PinkBunny - May 22, 2009 02:22 PM (GMT)
On Wednesday I was visiting my friend, Nicky when another friend of ours, Jenna, rang to say that their nextdoor neighbours had been evicted 3 weeks ago and they had left their rabbit behind. :cry1:
They had called the RSPCA and they came out, but they wouldn't take the rabbit as it had food and water. ??? It was Jenna who had been feeding it and she explained this to the RSPCA Officer.
So off I went, pet carrier in hand and hood up, climbed over the garden fence and rescued the poor bunny. She was gorgeous, a pale beigey colour with big brown eyes, I think she is a Nethie crossed with a slightly larger beed. She was in a terrible mess, she had been in a 6 foot x 4 foot carpetted shed with a tiny 2ft hutch which wouldn't even be suitable for a rat never mind a rabbit. Her claws were very long and she looked a little thin but she looked in overall good health. She wasn't keen to be picked up but she wasn't vicious at all and actually quite calm. I got her home and popped her in my spare hutch, fed her and gave her clean water and lots of veg.
I called Chloe at Fatfluffs to see if there was room for her and she said she might be able to make room over the weekend.
Next morning I went to check on her, she hadn't touched her veg and only eaten about a teaspoon of pellets, she hadn't touched her hay at all.
I put her on the grass but she's obviously never seen it before as she didn't attempt to eat it but she did have a good run around.
So, we've had her two days now and I've fallen in love with her. I'm concerned she's not eating though. She hasn't touched hay, grass or veg and she's only eaten a few pellets.
So, now what do I do? Should I buy her some muesli style food and gradually wean her off onto pellets or just wait and see if she gets hungry enough to eat them?
Also I need a new name for her, beginning with the letter F of course! hehe hehe

Are you keeping her Shelley? If so, let Chloe know as she's having a juggle round at the mo to accommodate bun.
The bun will need to be vet checked. You could try the bun with the crap mix to begin with.

Vet check will be a good idea incase she has teeth problems, hope she eats soon

She has started to eat now, a little greens and some pellets but no hay or grass. I'm taking her to the vets on Tuesday for a check up.
We still don't know what to do with her though, we have called her Fifi.
PROBLEM:
We have to try to rehome at least one bunny due to lack of room so we are in a real muddle. I asked the kids what they wanted to do and they said they want to keep her. When given the option of finding a new home for atleast one bunny, my older two both said they prefer to keep Fifi and try and find a nice home for Flip. (Last year I took in a doe who was pregnant, we found homes for all 3 babies but Flip came back to me after his new owners split up. The doe died when the kits were 6 weeks old) The hutch Fifi is in right now was about to be taken to the tip as it's not big enough although she still gets to run around the garden.
So, I don't know what to do, I might try and rehome Flip on rabbit rehome first and see what happens. Or hope I win the lottery this weekend and can buy a bigger house and a bigger garden hehe

She's a little cutie isn't she. How on earth could anyone just swan off and leave their pet rabbit ( or any pet for that matter) is beyond me.
Glad to read that she is eating now.

this made me so sad :( I agree, I don;t know how anyone could just leave their bunny!

Awww she is a lovely bun :bunhug: Have you decided to keep her now?
PinkBunny - May 31, 2009 02:00 PM (GMT)
Well, we really want to keep her, she is lovely. She is eating same food as the other buns now but still doesn't know she should eat hay, grass, greens, carrots or apples yet!
I have been given a hutch by a 'freecycler' so for now we have more room but the answer really is neutering. She is very funny, when she's in the run and Frosty (un neutered buck) is running around the garden she sticks her bum in the air and he is going frantic to get in there! Love at first sight!! hehe
So I think they will be a couple, hoping to get Frosty done quite soon and then her in a few weeks time and then we'll start the bonding.
On Tesco direct they are selling a wooden playhouse for about £120!! So I'm thinking of getting that and seeing if I can get 4 buns to live together in there and take it in turns to have the run of the garden.
It's all plans plans plans.
I have put Flip on RR but I'm very fussy about where and who he goes to so we'll probably end up keeping him. A breeder asked me for him yesterday and I said no. hehe hehe

ah, you are so kind to your bunnies. I think she fell on her feet living with you. I have a sneaky feeling you will keep her! :bunhug:

Sorry - I'm a little confused here ....
Fifi is the bunny you rang me about is that right? You are now keeping her? Is that right? You are rehoming one of the buns you already have to make room for her? Is that right????
If so - how is this a good thing? What about the bunny, Flip, who thinks it's life home is with you?
Please tell me I have got the wrong end of the stick here ........
PinkBunny - June 3, 2009 08:27 PM (GMT)
I do see your point Chloe and I spose the more sensible thing would have been to bring Fifi straight to you so we didn't fall in love with her. But I havent had Flip very long, he hasn't always lived here with us, he came back about 2 months ago after his owners split up. I think Fifi just touched my heart after the way she had been left behind.
It was a really, really tough decision that was not taken lightly at all. But, saying that he won't be going just anywhere. I have 2 people to visit on Saturday to see if I feel they can offer Flip the home he needs. I have already turned down several people who have asked for him.
I know the best answer would be to get all my buns neutered, but, financially, at the moment, it's not an option.
I'm sorry if you feel I'm wrong Chloe
