Title: lettuce and oranges

bunny mummy - May 27, 2009 11:04 AM (GMT)
tad bizzare thread, but i have always been under the impression that rabbits could not eat lettuce or oranges. i think a vet must have told me this donkeys years ago - as none of 3 rabbits that i had when i was growing up or dk and currently rosie and jimmy have ever been given lettuce or orange.

tad confused as when rosie was in the vets, when i went to visit her on the saturday the new vet gave her ( along with a variety of other veg and bits of fruit) some lettuce and a chunk of orange. i was more concerned about rosie at that time ( obvioulsy!!) - anyway i said to the women, i was always under the impression that rabbits couldnot have lettuce and i really am not too sure about orange!!! she said both are perfectly fine!! I took them away from her.

I still havent given either of them lettuce or orange - just wondered what you think!

I know buns can't have iceberg lettuce , I think round lettuce is ok ( someone tell me quick if I am wrong) and I sometimes gice mine a small helping of mixed leaves - no iceberg - ( very rarely) as a treat.

Haven't got a clue about the oranges though !!!

I've never given mine orange or lettuce although Mopsey did help herself to a mandarin when she was a house bunny

I just thought it strange that the vet would give lettuce and orange. It was iceburg lettuce as well. I would not have mentioned it , but I got an email today that said advocodo is extremely toxic to rabbits ( i didnt know that either for that matter) and it reminded my about that vet.

As far as I know iceberg lettuce is not nutritious for bunnies because the leaves are not green enough but it will not harm them. The greener lettuces like romaine can be give to buns. I've also read not to give celery as there is no nutrition in it but again it won't harm them and all my buns love it!

Oranges, again as far as I know are safe, mine do eat them and love them but due to high sugar content I only offer them small pieces on the odd occasion.

Did you also know that apple pips are poisonous? So is the green stalk of a tomato!

Everything in moderation I say

I have never given mine lettuce or oranges, they would probably turn their noses up at it anyway :laugh1: :laugh1:

I used to give round lettuce to Flip all the time until I read somewhere that they shouldn't have lettuce. Itried Snowy on a segment of a clemantine once after being told some rabbits go wild for them and they were fine in moderation. I'm not sure about the normal big oranges though. I would have thought they were a bit too acidic.

Its conflicting isnt it. I think I will just stick to what I have been doing and not give them either. Rosie would probably turn her nose up as she is a funny sod at times, but Jimmy eats anything.

I forgot to say, Snowy wouldn't go near the segment I gave her. hehe
