Several members have been in touch about the Aldi supermarket chain
offering “exceptional value” rabbit/guinea pig hutches for £39.99 on
Sunday 28th June. The size of the hutches, at 46.5 inches long is
well below the minimum size of 6 feet recommended by both the RWAF and
the RSPCA and the sale of them so cheaply perpuates the notion that
rabbits are low maintenence pets, which of course we all know to be
untrue. Huge numbers of rabbits bought without a consideration of the
commitment required are abandoned or endure a solitary life in a small
hutch at the bottom of the garden. Additionally, the ad for the Aldi
hutch doesn't mention that an additional run would be required to
allow the animal to exercise.
It may well be too late to stop the offer going ahead on Sunday but
they are likely to continue stocking them at that price after the
offer date. The RWAF are contacting Aldi to try and make them aware
of their responsibilities as a retailer, and the stipulation of the
Animal Welfare Act that pets need to be able to demonstrate their
natural behaviours.
If you would like to contact Aldi raise your concerns about this
issue, then the Managing Director's name is Paul Foley. The address
is:
Aldi Stores, Holly Lane, Atherstone, Warwickshire CV9 2SQ
Their telephone number is 0844 406 8800
Thanks!
