The epicentre of the 6.1 magnitude quake was near the town of Selfoss, 30 miles from the capital, Reykjavik.
Iceland's RUV radio reported no injuries but said buildings had been damaged.
Authorities advised residents in the area to leave their homes because of the possibility of aftershocks.
RUV said the road between Reykjavik and Selfoss was closed by damage.

Channel 2 television said that it was not immediately clear how many injuries had occurred.
Police travelled around the nearby town of Hveragerdi, 28 miles east of Reykjavik, with a loud hailer, advising residents to stay outdoors.
